West Ham fans want Joao Mario back

OPINION

Things haven’t always been that easy for West Ham over the past couple of years. From fan unrest to disappointing performances on the pitch, there has always been a feeling that things could be better than they are. This season was an improvement, definitely, but there is still some way to go. Strangely enough, however, it was a rather unlikely source who brought the calm that laid the foundation for Manuel Pellegrini’s promising debut campaign. David Moyes, much-maligned in recent years, did a fantastic job of steadying the ship when he was called upon last season, and without him, who knows where the Hammers might have ended up. Part of his success was his astute business in the transfer market, and right up there with his best moves was the loan capture of Portuguese international Joao Mario. The midfielder came in in January and brought an air of class to the centre of the park, scoring twice in 14 appearances. According to the Daily Mail, he is available for a fee of around £15 million this summer, with Inter Milan looking to offload him, and West Ham fans are desperate for the club to re-sign him. The price is right, the fans love him – this wouldn’t be the worst move in the world, all things considered. Maybe the board should listen to the word from the stands.
