OPINION
If you’d told West Ham fans a week ago that they would already have two new signings in the bag then they would have been punching the air in delight. If you’d told them that they’d signed a pair of veteran back-up goalkeepers, they’d have looked at you like you had two heads. And yet, here we are, with David Martin making the brave switch from Millwall to join Roberto as the Hammers’ second signing of the transfer window, as confirmed by the club themselves. The stopper follows in the footsteps of his father, Alvin Martin, who plays 598 times for the Irons. You somehow feel that Martin jnr. might struggle to match that figure, but nonetheless, he will be welcomed with open arms by supporters, as was shown by their reaction to his tweet confirming the news. There will be those who argue that playing understudy at a Premier League team is not as good as playing regularly for a Championship outfit, and perhaps those people would be right, but at the end of the day, Martin has made his choice, and it will be a pleasant way for him to wind down his career while earning a decent wage. Here’s just hoping that there aren’t any repeats of the dreadful blunder that saw the 6’2″ keeper [Transfermarkt] singlehandedly oust Millwall from the FA Cup this season.
