West Brom will meet with former Brighton boss Chris Hughton this week as the Black Country club aims to hire a new permanent manager, according to Telegraph journalist John Percy.

The newspaper reporter claimed via his personal Twitter account on Monday that Hughton, 60, will hold talks with Albion “in the next few days”.

It is understood that Bruno Labbadia is now unlikely to become Darren Moore’s permanent successor at The Hawthorns while Percy has also ruled Chris Wilder, Garry Monk, Danny Cowley and Slavisa Jokanovic out of the running.

However there is also one other manager that interests the Baggies, but it is not clear who that may be.

OPINION

Hughton is someone who is proven in the Championship having won promotions to the Premier League with both Newcastle and Brighton. The former Birmingham manager is out-of-work right now after leaving the AMEX at the end of the season, so he is certainly someone that would not be too difficult to hire for Mark Jenkins and Luke Dowling. However this is Jenkins we’re talking about and nothing is straight forward. West Brom sacked Moore in March and so far their search for a new manager has been a shambles. Although James Shan did well as the interim boss, not hiring someone to replace Moore straight away could have been the fatal blow in Albion’s promotion hopes. And now it is June, almost a month since the club’s season ended, and no one has been hired. Jenkins needs to start accepting the fact that he will have to spend some of the club’s money here to hire someone who at least has an ounce of experience about them. Hughton doesn’t play the best style of football but he is someone with a great CV who could be the best bet for the Baggies.
