Patrick Vieira, Steven Gerrard and Mikel Arteta are at the top of the Newcastle shortlist as Mike Ashley looks for a new manager, according to the Telegraph.

Eddie Howe is also a wanted man but the report claims they are doubtful they would be able to land the Bournemouth manager.

Sean Dyche is also an option, with Rafa Benitez set to leave the club when his contract runs out on Sunday.

Vieira (43) and Arteta (37) are said to be interested in hearing Newcastle out as they look for a young manager to take over from 59-year-old Benitez.

OPINION

Young managers are all the rage at the moment. 12 months ago there were questions being asked about Frank Lampard being given the Derby job without any prior experience. He’s now about to take over at Chelsea. Steven Gerrard, 39, has done a good job in his first season at Rangers but is unlikely to leave now. He signed a four-year deal and was set to reject a Derby approach if they came calling to replace Lampard. He said money is not a motivator for him and that he had enjoyed his first year at Rangers. An offer from the Premier League is different but Gerrard has only done half a job at Ibrox and will surely feel now is too soon to leave. If Lampard’s dream job is Chelsea, Gerrard’s is Liverpool but Jurgen Klopp isn’t leaving anytime soon. Patrick Vieira finished seventh in Ligue 1 with Nice in his first season there after two years with New York City. Newcastle would surely be tempting for him and for Arteta, who came close to the Arsenal job last year after learning the ropes under Pep Guardiola. All three would probably be welcomed by the majority of Newcastle fans. Arteta is the new bookies favourite but that means precious little in a market as volatile as this.
