OPINION

Southampton fans will surely be relieved at the news that long-forgotten striker Guido Carrillo could be on his way out of the club later this summer.

According to Sky Sports News, the 28-year-old, who was sent out on loan to La Liga side Leganes last summer, could move back to his homeland in Argentina with Boca Juniors interested in his services.

This is surely fantastic news for Saints fans. There are bad signings, then there are bad signings. And this was a case of the latter. Brought in to St Mary’s from Monaco by former boss Mauricio Pellegrino in January 2018, he failed to have any telling impact at all.

In his debut season, he only made seven Premier League appearances and did not score a single goal. Add in another three appearances in cup competitions and that he did not score a goal then, and you therefore get a player who has provided a very poor return.

And that return is made worse when you consider that Carrillo was signed for £19million – not a small amount of money.

After his debut season ended, he was rightfully dispatched with and sent to Spain, where he once again did not have an impact.

In 33 appearances in all competitions, he only managed six goals and one assist, which, again, is a poor return.

When you consider that Shane Long – who had some of the worst form for Premier League strikers a while back – finished the season with four goals in seven league games, there is no need for Carrillo to come back – not that he ever would be considered to.

Long has finally found form again and if he keeps it up, he can become the main man again for the Saints.

As for Carrillo, a move back to Argentina would be best for him as his Premier League days look numbered, if they are not up already.
