Former Rangers favourite Giovanni van Bronckhorst has heaped praise on current duo Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis.

The veteran pair arrived at Ibrox in January, and the Dutchman has claimed that they could be key to the Gers’ title hopes next season.

As quoted in the Daily Record, he said: “Every side needs a blend and Rangers will have plenty of experience in Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis.

“The pair of them have had excellent careers and they are excellent professionals.

“They will want to show they have plenty more left to offer and that’s why they will be crucial to any success Rangers are to have in the new season.

“Steven Gerrard will be counting on them to push all the way for the title.”

OPINION

You cannot underestimate the importance of having good experienced players in a squad. Not only do Defoe and Davis offer great options on the pitch, but they will be hugely influential characters in the dressing room too. These are players who have seen it all, and who have played at the very to level for quite some time now. There isn’t much that they won’t know about the professional game, and if you’re pushing for a title, as Rangers will be hoping to do next season, then that kind of knowhow can be vital. Obviously, neither one is a long term solution to Steven Gerrard’s side, but if they can help push this side on towards a position where they can be considered serious contenders, then that would be a very positive thing indeed. Whether Rangers will be able to win the title next year is a matter of some contention, but certainly Defoe and Davis can help this team build the foundations for future bids.
