Tottenham are in pursuit of Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Italian news outlet claims that the 22-year-old’s agent is currently in London amid interest from Spurs and their local rivals Arsenal.

It is understood that Pellegrini’s contract has a £31.2million release clause tied into it, which can be paid in two separate installments.

Calcio Mercato adds that Roma want to remove the release clause by offering the central midfielder a new contract which will see him earn a pay rise and become the Serie A club’s vice-captain.

Good move for Tottenham?

Pellegrini is a very good midfielder and has been a key player for Roma in the last couple of seasons ever since he returned to the Stadio Olimpico following a spell at Sassuolo.

The 10-times Italy international made 33 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring four goals and supplying seven assist in the process.

Pellegrini is very much a playmaker-style midfielder, and while Spurs do need to add some extra options to that area of the squad this summer, they could do with eyeing up midfielders who are more on the physical side, like Tanguy Ndombele.

The Roma star could be a good addition for Spurs, and quite a cheap one too, but they should only look to sign him if they secure a physical midfielder first.

Likely to happen?

Pellegrini does seem interested in a move to Spurs and the fact that his agent is in London could mean that he is about to hold talks with the Champions League runners-up.

However this report does seem as though it is something that’s being put out there by an agent to help earn his client a new contract.
