Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas has heaped praise on Ryan Sessegnon, who he fully expects to be a Tottenham player when the new season kicks off in August.

Sessegnon has been linked with Tottenham for a while but, talking on the Last Word on Spurs Transfer Special podcast (29mins) he said, “For the first time of all these windows it’s one I expect to get done.”

However, Thomas doesn’t think that Tottenham are in any rush to sign him.

“It’s correct he wants to join Spurs, that’s how I understand it” Thomas said, “and because of that Tottenham can afford to be quite relaxed.

“It’s been reported it’s been close for ages but it’s not close until the two clubs start talking about doing a deal and I understand that hasn’t happened yet.

“Man United and Juve are in the background but they know Ryan wants to stay in London and go to Spurs. He’s not going to sign a new contract, he’s got one year left at Fulham, they’ve been relegated, Pochettino loves him, has done for ages. All the talent is still there, 19-years-old, what more do you want?”

OPINION

Sessegnon to Tottenham has been a long-running transfer story so it’s amazing to think that the player is still only 19-years-old. He had a tough season in the Premier League with Fulham, seeing his side get relegated, but this does seem like one deal Spurs will definitely get over the line this summer. It’s the right time for him to leave Fulham, with his contract running out next year. He wants to move to Tottenham and Pochettino rates him highly, and this is the last window Fulham will be able to cash in for a huge fee. They’re not going to get £50million for him but they will get a sizeable fee and that will help them rebuild in the Championship. It will be fascinating to see what Sessegnon can do when he plays for a top Premier League team and it will be fascinating to see whether Pochettino has him down for the left-back position or whether he’ll be used further forward.
