Former Celtic star Chris Sutton has taken aim at Rangers with a cheeky seven word dig after claims the smiles were returning to the faces of those at Ibrox.

The Gers finished as runners up behind the Hoops in the Scottish Premiership, Neil Lennon leading the Parkhead outfit to their eighth consecutive league title, while the Gers were also forced to watch their fierce rivals complete a third consecutive domestic treble.

Former Rangers star Hugh Burns claimed in the Daily Record that the happy feeling around Ibrox was a sign that Steven Gerrard had been a success but Sutton was more focused on their lack of silverware.

In response to Burns’ comments, he wrote on his personal Twitter account: “Trophies are probably better than smiles mind…”

Opinion

Unfortunately for Burns and the rest of the Rangers faithful, Sutton does have a point. Until their side start challenging for the league title and the cups again they are going to remain in their rivals’ shadow, with Celtic showing no signs of slowing up any time soon. At the end of the day, silverware, not smiles, is what the history books remember and while it might be feeling quite positive in the blue half of Glasgow, a couple more years without anything to show for their progress and tensions will be running high again. It cannot be easy watching your fiercest rivals win everything in sight – it must be how Manchester United fans are feeling about Manchester City right now – and so the aim for Rangers will be to end the Bhoys’ reign over Scotland sooner rather than later. That of course is a task easier said than done but until it happens, they will be easy pickings for the likes of Sutton and his jibes.
