Spurs fans react to Conte report

|

OPINION

Of all the stories to come out in the aftermath of the Champions League final, the claim that Tottenham made an approach for former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte earlier this season is perhaps the strangest one. According to Calcio Mercato, Spurs sounded out the Italian over the possibility of taking over from Mauricio Pochettino given the strong links that were made between the Argentine and Manchester United and Real Madrid. The report goes as far as to say that an offer of an £8.8 million-a-year salary was made, but that Conte decided against it because of fears over Tottenham’s lack of spending. This feels like something that should be taken with a huge pinch of salt. It makes sense for Daniel Levy to have sounded out potential replacements, but to claim that he went as far as making a concrete offer is something else. Spurs fans have been split on the matter. The most common reaction has been instant rejection of the notion, but there are some who have been surprisingly receptive to the possibility. It isn’t going to happen, with Conte now at Inter, but it certainly would have been interesting to see Tottenham under a manager of Conte’s winning ilk.
