Sporting CP have tabled a new deal to Bruno Fernandes but it will not match what Tottenham have offered the Portugal international, according to Record.

The Portuguese newspaper claims that Sporting are doing their utmost to keep hold of Fernandes, 24, this summer after a stunning 2018/19 campaign in which he was involved in 50 goals across all competitions.

It is understood that Sporting president Frederico Varandas has made Fernandes an offer that would making him the highest-paid player at the José Alvalade Stadium, but it is “impossible to match” what Spurs have offered to the Portuguese midfielder.

Record adds that Fernandes is likely to make a decision on this contract offer in the early part of next week.

OPINION

You cannot blame Sporting CP for trying to keep hold of Fernandes but most clubs in the world find it hard to match the money that clubs in the Premier League are able to offer to players. Even though Spurs are nowhere near the biggest spenders in England’s top-flight, they will still find it easy to blow whatever Sporting are offering out of the water. Spurs might need to wait it out to see who they can sign this summer, especially when it comes to signing midfielders because Christian Eriksen is widely expected to quit the club this summer with Real Madrid linked with signing him. Fernandes is not as good as Eriksen – not many players are – but he would definitely be a solid replacement due to him scoring 32 goals and supplying 18 assists in 52 appearances last season. Once Eriksen’s future is sorted, we may know more about what is going to happen with Spurs targets like Fernandes.
