Former West Brom caretaker manager James Shan is set to remain at the club in a coaching role within the youth system after the arrival of Slaven Bilic as permanent boss, according to Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett.

The broadcast reporter, speaking on Sky Sports News (13/06, 15:41) after Bilic was confirmed to have taken charge at the Hawthorns, claims that Shan has been retained by the midlands outfit after replacing Darren Moore temporarily until the end of the season.

However it is stated by Dorsett that he will move into the academy setup, a role he previously held before being promoted to the first team coaching staff during the 2017/18 season.

The journalist said on Sky Sports: “He’s been kept on by the club, I ought to stress, in a coaching capacity with the under age levels.”

Opinion

Shan’s time in charge of the Baggies’ first team will have done his coaching career no harm at all. He was thrust into a difficult situation, when many people felt that Darren Moore should not have been axed in the first place, and did not embarrass himself with his side’s performances. You can completely understand why West Brom have chosen to go for a much more experienced and notable figure in the shape of Bilic but it is good to see the club keep Shan on board in a youth role. His experience of managing the first team will have taught him an awful lot about what it takes to be a top quality coach and his newly found knowledge will no doubt help shape the futures of future West Brom stars. Who knows, maybe he could return to the first team fold in the future. For now, the club know their starlets are in good hands.
