Rangers attacker Glenn Middleton will tell the club that he wants a loan move away from the club for the 2019/20 season, according to Football Insider.

The 19-year-old was promoted from the Gers’ Under-20 setup last summer and enjoyed a solid breakthrough season under Steven Gerrard, netting five goals and assisting five others in 29 appearances.

Football Insider says, however, that Middleton’s chances of first-team football next season will fall with Rangers reportedly keen on bringing back Ryan Kent and signing Sheyi Ojo from Liverpool.

The winger will tell Gers chiefs that he wants to move to the English Championship rather than stay in Scotland, in order to accelerate his development.

OPINION

If this report from Football Insider is true, it looks like Middleton knows exactly what is good for him as regards his future, and a move to the Championship would definitely benefit him. The 19-year-old made 29 appearances last term, but as the report claims, he is right to think that his chances of getting similar amounts of game time next time round will slip. If Kent comes back in, he is likely to have a lot of first-team involvement as Gerrard was a big fan of the Liverpool loanee and he had a good impact at Ibrox. As for Ojo, he is another Reds player that Gerrard will know from his time with his former club and there is a real chance that that deal could get over the line. Therefore, with Middleton playing in the same position, he is better off leaving for a season. And the Championship would be a great destination, having seen the success of the likes of Harry Wilson in the English second tier last term.
