Celtic boss Neil Lennon has warned his Rangers critics that “they have been wrong before” about his ability to bring success to Parkhead.

Having been given the permanent Hoops job after adding the finishing touches to the club’s treble treble last term, Lennon is intent on making sure Celtic continue to dominate Scottish football from next season onward.

The Northern Irishman issued a tongue-in-cheek message to Rangers fans questioning his credentials by reiterating that he has proved them wrong on more than one previous occasion.

Speaking to the Glasgow Evening Times he said: “They (Rangers fans) have been wrong before on numerous occasions. So, hopefully they will be wrong again. They have got to try and stop us doing nine or 10 [Premiership titles in a row] but I can’t comment on what Rangers are going to do or who they are going to recruit.

“We are going try and recruit the best players we can get for the best positions and for the best positions and improve as we go along. And give the squad a lift because it needs a lift. And give the players who have been at it for three seasons now the jag of quality in there that they need.”

OPINION

Although Lennon’s warning is obviously meant as a joke, there is a point that needs to be heeded by Rangers fans. The Celtic boss has proved his credentials as a title-winning boss on more than one occasion, and Gers fans should be hasty in their assessment of his record. When Brendan Rodgers left for Leicester City and Lennon added the final pieces of Celtic’s treble treble puzzle, there was no one else they could have appointed as the permanent boss there and then. What’s more, there is no doubt Lennon will go on to win more silverware with the Hoops next term. On the other hand, the manager is right in saying that he needs to strengthen his squad to keep away from Steven Gerrard’s side, who are no doubt intent on closing the gap to their Glasgow rivals. One thing is for sure: it is going to be an interesting summer of business for both clubs.
