Sky Sports journalist Andrew Dickson has suggested that Rangers should make a move for Alan Hutton this summer.

The 50 cap Scotland international is without a side after it was confirmed by Aston Villa that he would be leaving the side, and Dickson has claimed that he would be a good option for Steven Gerrard’s Gers given the likelihood of interest in James Tavernier during the transfer window.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, Dickson said: “Given the interest there’s likely to be in Tavernier this summer, Alan Hutton might not be the worst option for Rangers to consider…”

OPINION

To be fair, this might not be the worst idea in the world. Hutton has been a fine servant for Aston Villa down the years, but it is probably the right time to let him go, given that they are on the cusp of a return to the top flight. You would expect, however, that he is still more than good enough for the Scottish Premiership. Obviously, in an ideal world, you wouldn’t want Tavernier going anywhere, but he has enjoyed such a positive season that it is hard to see how there wouldn’t be decent interest in him this summer. That doesn’t mean he will go, of course, but it does perhaps mean that Rangers should prepare for the possibility of him departing. In fairness though, why not bring Hutton in regardless of Tavernier’s future? He is a free agent, his wages wouldn’t be ridiculous, and he would surely jump at the chance to return to his old club to see out his career. Dickson might be onto something with this one.
