Mikael Lustig will make a decision over his future at Celtic this week, according to the Scottish Sun.

The 32-year-old Swede is currently vice captain at Parkhead, with manager Neil Lennon keen to tie him down to a new contract.

But the 6’2″ defender [Transfermarkt] has a host of offers from elsewhere on the continent, including ones from Malmo and AIK Stockholm in his own country.

Lustig is currently away on international duty, but is expected to make a decision on his future when he returns.

OPINION

There are certainly arguments to be made for and against tying Lustig down. On the one hand, here is a player the wrong side of 30 who probably doesn’t have a great deal to offer Celtic in terms of long term plans, with several offers on the table to offload him with minimum fuss. On the other, Neil Lennon is set to undergo a bit of a rebuild at Parkhead, and it is a wise idea to keep certain experienced figures around to maintain consistency in the dressing room. Lustig has been at the club since 2012, and is a well-established fixture of the side. Having him around, even if it isn’t in the same regular first team capacity that he has occupied for all these years, would be a prudent move from the manager as he looks to stamp his own image on the squad. Sure, let Lustig go in a year or two when things are a little steadier, but for now, do all you can to tie him down to a new deal.
