Celtic have stepped up their interest in Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull after launching an official inquiry into his signature, according to the Daily Record.

The Scottish outlet claims that Celtic have made contact with Motherwell, and have asked to be kept updated on any change in his situation, with Turnbull being rated at no less than £3million.

Turnbull has enjoyed a great breakthrough season in Scotland, scoring 16 and assisting seven goals in his 34 appearances. This form also led to the youngster earning his first call-up to the Scottish under-20 side in March.

The Hoops will face serious competition from Premier League sides Southampton and Burnley in the race for the 19-year-old.

Motherwell CEO, Alan Burrows, took to social media to address the situation surrounding Turnbull at the end of May, writing on his personal Twitter account it would take more than their club record to tempt him away from the club.

Good move for Celtic?

Turnbull has enjoyed a great season at Motherwell and has really proved he can make the step up into Celtic’s side in the next campaign.

Neil Lennon is obviously a big admirer of the teen and the reported Premier League interest shows how much of a talent he really is.

A record of 16 goals and seven assists in his 34 appearances is a great record from midfield and for only £3million, it could turn out to be a real bargain.

After already settling into the Scottish Premier League with ease, this would be a great move for the Hoops, who would gain a 19-year-old with plenty of good years ahead of him at a bargain price.

Likely to happen?

Motherwell’s CEO admitting they would accept offers of up to £3million shows that he could be resigned to the fact that Turnbull will be leaving Fir Park this summer.

With Premier League and Championship sides interested in England, Celtic will need to act quickly in persuading the Motherwell sensation.

The pull of Celtic for young Scottish players cannot be underestimated, with the chance to play for the Scottish giants a hard prospect to turn down.

After Celtic and Neil Lennon have made an official inquiry, it would be hard to see Turnbull going anywhere else but Celtic in this transfer window.
