Rangers are set to offer Charlton Athletic midfielder Joe Aribo a long-term contract to beat the competition to his signature, according to Football Insider.

Steven Gerrard has identified Aribo as a top target this summer and is willing to give the 22-year-old a big pay rise in order to convince him to move to Ibrox.

The reputable football outlet reported that after rejecting a new deal at Charlton, a host of clubs from Europe joined the race for the signature of the recently promoted starlet.

Aribo starred in Charlton’s run to the Championship, scoring 10 goals and adding five assists in his 39 games from midfield.

Celtic are also said to be interested in Aribo, with Rangers hoping an early offer could tempt the midfielder into signing a long-term deal at the club.

Good move for Rangers?

This would be a great move from Rangers and Steven Gerrard. Joe Aribo has proved he is a great young talent under Lee Bowyer at Charlton this season and given time could develop into a great prospect in the Scottish Premier League. Scoring 10 goals and assisting five from midfield is a great return for Aribo and should he continue with this attacking mentality, he would fit into the Gers’ side brilliantly. At 22-years-old, the midfielder has time on his side to develop into an even better player and where better to do it than under ex-England international, Steven Gerrard.

Likely to happen?

Joe Aribo clearly has a lot to think about in regards to his future. A transfer to Rangers would be a great move for his career and would introduce him to possible European football next season. The Light Blue’s seem keen to make this happen and with a much higher wage possible for the midfielder, Ibrox could be an ideal destination for Aribo. Having Steven Gerrard at the helm will certainly help Rangers cause and it would come as no surprise if Aribo was to make the switch to Scotland this summer.
