Rangers are in talks with the representatives of Bolton centre-forward Josh Magennis, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

The Northern Irish newspaper claims that the Light Blues could be set to sign the 28-year-old from the cash-strapped English club, who have entered administration, this summer.

It is understood that Magennis might even be allowed to leave Bolton on a free transfer due to the financial crisis at the Lancashire club, even though he was only signed from Charlton last summer for £400,000.

Good move for Rangers?

Magennis is a centre-forward who knows the Scottish Premiership well having had spells with Aberdeen and Kilmarnock north of the border and while the Northern Ireland international could be available for free this summer, he simply doesn’t score enough goals to be a good addition at Ibrox.

Although Bolton were plagued by issues last season, Magennis only scored three goals in 42 Championship appearances, 29 of which were starts.

He also only scored 12 times in 123 total appearances for Aberdeen.

Magennis has not always been a striker as during his time at Pittodrie he did spent a great deal of time playing as a right-back, but even when he did play up front he was hardly prolific.

Likely to happen?

Rangers do seem keen on doing a deal for Magennis and with the Belfast Telegraph reporting that Kyle Lafferty could be on his way out of Ibrox this summer, the Bolton forward might be a like-for-like replacement.

This is a deal that could happen, but Steven Gerrard should really be focusing on other targets.
