Rangers are considering whether to match Oldham’s valuation and offer £1million for defender George Edmundson, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claims that the Light Blues have already seen two bids worth up to £600,000 rejected by the English League Two club, but they could finally cave in and meet the Latics’ demands to land the 21-year-old centre-back this summer.

Edmundson was a key player for Oldham last season, earning 54 appearances across all competitions.

Good move for Rangers?

Edmundson could turn out to be a good player for Rangers if Steven Gerrard is able to sign him this summer, but there have to be doubts about whether he could step up in the Scottish Premiership straight away, as he has never played above the third-tier of English football.

The 6ft 3 [transfermarkt] colossus has enjoyed a good season at Boundary Park and clearly has the potential to be a good defender, but he is unlikely to be a first choice centre-back at Ibrox for at least one or two years, if he joins the Gers before next season kicks off.

Rangers need to strengthen their starting line-up more than anything, and Edmundson won’t do that.

If Gerrard is going to be spending seven-figure fees on players, then they need to be good enough to start.

Likely to happen?

Oldham are unlikely to reject an offer of £1million for Edmundson.

That is the valuation they have set and unless they think they can get more from Rangers, they would surely accept a bid of that amount.

Edmundson would likely be keen on the move too, so this is a deal that could materialise in the coming weeks.
