Rangers may have missed out on the signing of Oldham Athletic defender George Edmundson, after Peterborough United had a £600,000 offer for the player accepted, according to Football Insider,

Steven Gerrard’s side have long been linked with a move for the 6ft 3in tall centre-back (Source: WhoScored), with one report [The Scottish Sun] claiming that the Ibrox club have had three bids rejected.

Football Insider now claim that with a bid having been accepted, Posh are in pole position to land the defender, who was fantastic for Oldham and appeared in all but one of the club’s League One games last term.

OPINION

If this report is true, it is really bad news for Rangers fans. It is no secret that Gerrard is after one or two new centre-backs this summer to support Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson, and – by the sounds of it – Edmundson is one player the club have been trying long and hard to bring north of the border. But it looks as if their efforts might be in vain. Despite the centre-back submitting a transfer request at Oldham and there being a real chance of him signing for the Gers earlier on in the window, it now seems as if that chance has taken a fatal blow. Edmundson himself said he wanted to move to Rangers but the decision could be taken out of his hands. Peterborough are surely in the driving seat now, if their bid has been accepted, and will likely get a deal done, leaving Rangers in the lurch and back to square one, with Goldson and Katic their only recognised defensive pair as of now.
