Rangers have agreed a fee for Oldham centre-back George Edmundson, according to Sky Sports (live transfer blog, 10.46am).

This follows a report from Football Insider over a week ago that claimed Rangers were the favourites to land the in-demand 21-year-old, despite Peterborough having a £600,000 bid accepted.

The Daily Record reported that the fee for Edmundson is £650k and that a medical has been scheduled for this week.

Edmundson had previously handed in a transfer request to try and force an Ibrox move after multiple bids from Rangers were rejected by Oldham. Sky Sports says the biggest of these was more than £500,000.

TIF Verdict

It looks like Rangers are going to get their man after one of the messiest transfer sagas of the summer so far. Peterborough owner Darragh MacAnthony announced on Twitter that he was pulling out of the deal after the details were leaked and Oldham allegedly came back and asked for more money. He said that Edmundson was due for a medical at Peterborough last Friday but, 36 hours before, Oldham moved the goalposts and refused Peterborough permission to talk to their player unless the deal was re-negotiated. MacAnthony was having none of it and has said he will not deal with the club’s owners again. Meanwhile, it looks like Oldham have squeezed an extra £50k for Edmundson from Rangers. That’s decent money for a player who came up through the youth ranks at Oldham, making 79 appearances for the League Two side. Edmundson has always maintained that he wanted a move to Rangers and it looks like he’s set to get his wish. The only losers are Peterborough and Oldham if they want to deal with MacAnthony again in the future.
