West Ham have announced the signing of Millwall goalkeeper David Martin on a two-year deal.

The Hammers made a statement from their official website confirming the signing of the 6ft 2in stopper (Source: Transfermrkt) , who is the son of club legend Alvin Martin.

The club announced that the stopper will join the club on 1st July once his Millwall deal expires, on an initial two-year deal with the option to extend for a further 12 months.

“Signing for West Ham United is a dream, both for me and my family,” said Martin to whufc.com.

“I’ve grown up around West Ham and to come to my boyhood club is a dream.”

OPINION

The move isn’t really an impressive one, but it could be a smart move in the long run. Of course, Martin will not be coming into the London Stadium to compete for a place in the starting line-up, or it is certainly very, very unlikely, as he is no doubt being brought in purely for goalkeeping back-up. Martin has only featured eleven times for Millwall this season in all competitions, so it seems surprising that the Hammers have offered him a two-year deal at the London Stadium. Although Martin is the son of a club legend, it seems strange that the Hammers would bring him into the club instead of giving some of the younger lads a crack at being the back-up keeper, however the 33-year old may come in handy next season in the various cup competitions, where squad rotation is key. Martin will now be one of the leading competitors for Lukasz Fabianski next season, after making the step up to the Premier League.
