Valencia have contacted Newcastle United attacker Ayoze Perez’s agent over potentially signing him, according to COPE.

The Spanish radio station claim that the La Liga club is keen on the Magpies player as they’ve earmarked him this summer with them aiming to improve their squad ahead of the new season.

COPE report that Perez has been made aware of Valencia’s interest and has told some of his closest friends that he is delighted at the possibility of joining the Spanish outfit.

Good move for Newcastle?

No, far from it.

Perez, who earns £45,000-a-week (Source: Spotrac), is one of the stars of the Magpies’ current first-team, especially given how he ended his 2018/19 season in great form, and he should not be allowed to leave under any circumstances.

The 25-year-old scored 13 goals and registered four assists in 41 outings in his latest campaign, and it would be hard to replace him if he ended up departing anytime soon.

Given that it’s believable that Perez would fancy a return to Spain and when you consider that Valencia finished fourth in La Liga last season, then it’s easy to imagine that if they make an offer, the player may want the Magpies to let him go.

While Newcastle do have Perez under contract until 2021, if a player has his head turned, it never ends well.

Likely to happen?

COPE aren’t the most trusted source around, so for now Newcastle fans shouldn’t worry that Perez is Valencia-bound.

However considering that a move for Perez is one that could realistically interest Valencia if they’re looking to strengthen their attacking options, you can’t say there is no chance this deal won’t develop in the current window.

Also you have to wonder given that Perez is a firm favourite of Rafa Benitez, whether the manager’s own uncertain future could play a part in the chances of this deal happening.
