Teddy Sheringham shared that he thought Tottenham had made progress under Mauricio Pochettino and that it was important the manager stayed at the club.

The former Spurs player stated that he thought Pochettino had put Spurs on the right track by consistently guiding his side to a top-four finish in the Premier League, and that it was now just about winning a trophy.

Sheringham shared that Spurs needed to hand Pochettino the funds to improve and freshen up his squad as it would allow fans to be excited about the new season.

“For me, he has to stay if the club is going to go forward, he has to stay,” said Sheringham on Sky Sports News (16:26, Thursday June 13th).

“He needs to be given the money to strengthen team, just to freshen things up, give Spurs an extra little spark, get the excitement going again around the fans and look forward to the next season rather than be apprehensive.

“He’s on the right track, the last four or five years, the progression of getting fourth, third, second in the Premier League, getting in the Champion League verdict every season is good, that’s progressive for me as it’s hard to do that every year.

“You end up playing a lot of games, March, April and fixture list is very congested, so it’s just about winning a trophy now.”

OPINION

It’s hard to disagree with Sheringham as he is spot-on with his verdict on Tottenham. Pochettino has taken the club forward since arriving but in order to keep making progress, he needs the transfer funds. The Argentinian manager worked wonders to get Spurs to a Champions League final in the latest season as the club welcomed no new arrivals in the last two transfer window. It was impressive that Pochettino was therefore able to go that far in the prestigious tournament with the squad he had available to him. So with that in mind hopefully Spurs chairman Daniel Levy hears Sheringham’s remarks and acts on them, as it would be nice for Tottenham fans to go into their 2019/20 campaign being able to dream. If new arrivals don’t arrive or even worst, Pochettino leaves, then Spurs supporters will lose all hope about the upcoming campaign before a ball is even kicked. However it’s worth pointing out, it’s hard to believe the Spurs manager will pack his bags anytime soon.
