Jose Mourinho has named Christian Eriksen in his Champions League team of the year.

The Dane enjoyed a fine run in Europe this season, scoring twice and assisting four more as Tottenham made it all the way to the final before losing 2-0 to Liverpool in Madrid.

And despite Spurs’ efforts, Mourinho only saw fit to include Eriksen in his XI when speaking on RT, as reported by the Mirror.

The playmaker was joined by six Liverpool players, three from former club Ajax, and Lionel Messi.

OPINION

This is testament to just how well Eriksen has played in Europe this season. Tottenham in general have enjoyed a fine run on the continent, with many standout performers, but the fact that Mourinho has chosen to go with the Dane and nobody else should show you just how influential he has been. There has never been any doubting Eriksen’s ability, but there have been times this season when he has looked like an elite player. That in itself will be a worry to Spurs, especially given his precarious contract situation, but for now, they should just take comfort from the fact that they have a player like him on their books. Contract talks have seemingly stalled, but one the basis of what he has shown this campaign, Daniel Levy must pull out all the stops to make sure that he sticks around in north London.
