This is no doubt going to be a huge summer for Tottenham.

After a season that saw them fluctuate between the sublime and the infuriating, it is high time that they put to bed any lingering doubts over their status as a so-called “big club” and finally started challenging in the transfer market.

The alternative, and one that fans won’t want to even consider, is that they accept they have found their level, and come out of this relative golden era for the club without a trophy to show for it.

The other major concern will be that a lack of activity could force Mauricio Pochettino to wash his hands of the frugality that has held his tenure back.

All of that considered, Daniel Levy is expected to give him a fair amount of backing, but issues have been complicated somewhat by the the latest update on Christian Eriksen’s situation.

Speaking to Danish outlet Ekstra Bladet, the playmaker said: “I have also said that I would like to try something new.

“I hope there will be a clarification during the summer. That’s the plan.”

That sounds for all the world like a player determined to leave the club, and if that is the case then he will leave a monumental vacuum that will need filling.

The kind of quality needed to replace a player like Eriksen doesn’t come cheap, but Football.London’s Tottenham correspondent, Alasdair Gold, thinks he may have the answer.

Speaking on Twitter, he said: “If Tottenham can get big money for Eriksen, maybe they can bring in new faces, freshen up.

“Pochettino has seemingly been aware of it for a while because he’s been talking about this painful rebuild, and that would include players like Eriksen moving on.

“It would mean a lot of changes at Tottenham. Eriksen’s a very specific kind of playmaker, they’d have to look for something different.

“Who knows, maybe even a cheeky bid for Isco at Real Madrid?”

A move for Isco would be a brilliant idea.

The four time Champions League winner has endured a pretty miserable season at Madrid, starting just 11 La Liga matches and hitting just six goals in all competitions.

He gives the distinct impression of a player who is out of favour and running out of patience.

If he went to Tottenham he would be a star turn, and one who could fill Eriksen’s boots better than most.

It would be ambition, but stranger things have happened.
