Mauricio Pochettino will need reassuring that he has the consistent backing of Daniel Levy in the transfer window for this summer and beyond, according to Football.London’s Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold.

Spurs were beaten in the Champions League final by Liverpool on Saturday night, and while it is generally accepted that they will be looking to spend this summer after two barren transfer windows, Gold claims that the Argentine will need assuring that there is more money to come from this point onwards.

Writing in an article for Football.London, he said: “All indications coming out of the club are that the Argentine will be backed with funds to push on next season, but he needs to be convinced that it’s the beginning of an exciting new project rather than a one-off gesture.

“He will not stand for another season of grind which has taken its toll on him and his coaching staff as they’ve had to put fires out all over the place.”

OPINION

This is probably a fair point from Gold. What’s the point in Levy putting his hand in his pocket one summer and then keeping the pursestrings tied for the next however long? Tottenham are at a crossroads this season. They can either build on a really promising campaign – with a new stadium and a Champions League final under their belt – or they can settle for their status as also-rans and just accept that they will never challenge the top two. The latter wouldn’t be good enough for most fans, and given how well Pochettino has performed on a relative shoestring, surely it is time to cut loose and see what he can do with a bit of clout behind him. All Spurs have to do is look at last night’s victors, Liverpool. Fourth placed in the league last season, they made a handful of brilliant signings and are now champions of Europe, not to mention the greatest runners-up the Premier League has ever seen.
