Giving financial backing to Mauricio Pochettino should be Daniel Levy’s priority for Tottenham this summer, and the owner could pull off a “masterstroke” by offering him a new deal. according to Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold.

Spurs have not made any signings in the past two transfer windows, and Gold has claimed that trend must change this time around.

Writing in a piece for Football.London, he said: “Probably the most important thing Levy can do this summer. Pochettino is crucial to everything Tottenham have done in the past five years and to the future of the club.

“Pochettino is not after more money for himself, but he likes to feel that he and his staff are valued. If Levy were to offer him and his coaches a new contract just a year after his last it would be a masterstroke.

“A lot has happened in the past year and if the manager feels excited about the future he would likely sign on the dotted line to ensure his coaches are rewarded.”

OPINION

This may seem like an obvious thing to say from Gold, but the fact is that until certain assurances are made, Spurs don’t really know if they’re coming or going this summer. You would assume that Levy will back Pochettino, and the persistent speculation churning around the rumour mill would seemingly add substance to that, but until the signings start coming in, nothing is definite. This could be a fantastic summer for Spurs, but it could equally be a massive letdown. The thing is, it’s not simply a case of backing Pochettino for the good of the team, but backing him to convince him to stay. Nobody would blame the Argentine if he were to walk away in the event of another barren window, and should that happen you would worry for where Spurs turned next. They need him at the helm, and the only way they can ensure that is to give him the support he needs to do his job properly.
