Toby Alderweireld has warned Tottenham not to be satisfied despite reaching the final of the Champions League, according to the Mirror

The 30-year old defender believes that the club must now add to their mentality which has been instilled by Mauricio Pochettino, in order to replicate the success shown by Liverpool.

Alderweireld issued a defiant message to anyone that thinks Spurs would take a couple of years to get back to the Champions League final by insisting they aim to be in next year’s final.

Jurgen Klopp’s men tasted defeat in the competition last year, however overturned their misfortune last Saturday to defeat Spurs 2-0 in the final.

The Belgian international had a message Spurs after the final whistle, saying to the Mirror: “Of course everybody is very disappointed but we have to look at it like this: Its the next step that we have taken and now we have to keep going,

“Not think: ‘Oh we are happy with the final and maybe in a couple of years [we’ll be back].’ No, no. Next year we want to be here again’,

“That’s the mentality, the philosophy we have in this group. To improve every season. And again with the new stadium, with the new vibe in the team, we’ll do good.”

OPINION

Alderweireld has been a rock at the back for Spurs this season, and has been one of the stand out performers in a white shirt for Pochettino, featuring 50 times in total for the club across all competitions. Of course, both fans and players of the club have the right to be devastated after the result in the Champions League final, as it will most probably go down as their best chance at European glory in their entire history, and it quite possibly could stay that way for a long time, unless the club do what the £80,000-per week says they should do (Source: Spotrac) and better their European form next season. They will need to keep on going, and improve on this season once again next year if they want to challenge again for a trophy on the European stage, but it will prove to be just as difficult, if not more difficult next year, after an arguably lucky campaign in Europe this season.
