Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has set his sights on West Bromwich Albion attacker Jay Rodriguez due to him only costing £5million this summer, according to the Daily Mirror.

The newspaper’s live transfer blog (Thursday June 6th, 12:20) claims that the 29-year-old attacker has an escape clause in his West Brom contract which means he’ll only cost a club £5million this summer and Wilder feels that price point makes the forward great value.

The Mirror report that Rodriguez is keen to exit West Brom in order to join a Premier League side as he does not want to spend another campaign in the Championship.

Good move for West Brom?

It’s a terrible move.

Losing Rodriguez is bad enough, considering he scored 22 goals in 48 outings and was involved in 32% of the Baggies’ league goals (Source: Transfermarkt), but to lose him cheaply adds even more salt to the wound.

The 29-year-old attacker is well within his rights to want to leave in order to join a Premier League club, as he is good enough, but it doesn’t make it any less upsetting for West Brom fans.

The Mirror claim that Sheffield United aren’t alone in being alerted to Rodriguez’s services due to his price tag, and West Brom fans should brace themselves to wave goodbye.

Also they should start to worry who the club could possibly sign to replace him.

Likely to happen?

Rodriguez admirably stuck around at West Brom last summer in order to help them attempt to win promotion back to the Premier League, and you can’t see that happening again.

The 29-year-old knows that at his age, he has to jump at the chance to obtain top-flight football while he can as Premier League teams tend to be put off by players nearing the age of 30-years-old.

Also given that Rodriguez has a contract clause that dictates his price, then it’s hard to see him not being snapped up.

It’s just debatable whether he’ll end up at Sheffield United or with someone else.
