Rangers are in pursuit of midfielder Matty Willock as he prepares to leave Manchester United this summer as a free agent, according to Football Insider.

The reputable football news outlet claim that the Gers are keen on the 22-year-old after it was confirmed he would be departing Old Trafford as his contract comes to an end this month, having failed to make a first team appearance for the English giants.

Willock, brother of Arsenal’s Joe and Benfica’s Chris, spent last season on loan in both England and Scotland, playing the first half of the campaign with St Mirren, playing against Rangers twice, before heading south of the border to Crawley town.

Good move for Rangers?

The Light Blues are going to be looking for a couple new arrivals this summer and free agents would be ideal considering the lack of money Scottish sides have at their disposal.

Willock has some Premiership experience under his belt which would be handy for Steven Gerrard but not an awful lot of top flight game time, either in Scotland or England, which is really what the Gers need to add this summer.

Having been at a giant like Manchester United until the age of 22, he must be a good talent and he will no doubt have learned plenty from being at such a prestigious club, while his sell on value could be quite significant.

Midfielders are perhaps not the biggest priority for Gerrard but sometimes a deal comes along that you cannot afford to miss out on – this might be one of those.

Likely to happen?

It depends who else is in the running.

If Rangers are the only big name chasing his capture then Gerrard should have no trouble getting him on board, even if he is someone who has grown up at Liverpool’s fiercest rivals.

It looks a deal which could happen – it is up to Rangers to get it over the line.
