Stuart Pearce claimed Tottenham wouldn’t throw money at making signings in the summer transfer window and only a few new players would arrive.

The Sky Sports pundit shared he thought Spurs were going to be really tight in the transfer window and only make the odd signing, with Mauricio Pochettino instead opting to utilise the academy.

“Spurs as much as they want to throw some money at it, I don’t think they will do so,” said Pearce on Sky Sports News (10:52am, Thursday June 13th).

“I think it’s going to be really tight, he’s going to utilise the academy, the odd signing but not many at all.

“And it’s keeping your manager in place, and I know last year there was the odd statement that alluded to him being a bit frustrated as he wanted to push on and go challenge the big boys.

“You need to spend to do that and I personally think they do need to go spend some money, but I don’t think it’s readily available.”

However it’s clear many Tottenham fans will be hoping Pearce is barking up the wrong tree with his transfer claim and that their club are going to welcome several new recruits.

Spurs may have finished runners-up in the Champions League but it’s clear their squad needs strengthening.

Pochettino’s side finished third, a staggering 27 points behind champions Manchester City, and the club aren’t going to be able to bridge that gap to be serious title contenders unless several new signings are made.

Spurs also need to ensure they’re top-quality signings, and that means money needs to be spent.

Liverpool finished 25 points behind Man City in the 2017/18 campaign and finished just one point behind them in their 2018/19 campaign as they splashed money on new signings.

In fact the Reds spent over £160million (Source: Liverpool Echo) on new players to bridge the gap and that shows the level of money it would potentially take Spurs to put them in a position where they could keep up with Pep Guardiola’s side.

Yet Pearce’s remarks show he believes Tottenham don’t have that sort of money to spend this summer and that makes you wonder whether the club can do any better than a third-place finish and a runners-up medal next season.

Also many Tottenham fans were no doubt banking on this window being the one where their club finally sign a notable amount of players after not welcoming anyone in the last two windows.

So it’s fair to say, they’ll be hoping their club is about to make Pearce look foolish.
