The Bin Zayed Group are “absolutely sure” that their proposed takeover of Newcastle United will take place as speculation continues to circle around St James’ Park, according to reliable journalist Mark Douglas.

The Chronicle writer, who is considered one of the most reputable reporters covering the Magpies, says that the Middle Eastern investors, who have openly stated their intentions to secure a deal for the north east club, have made the bullish claim that they are certain a deal will take place.

Writing in a question and answer on the newspaper’s website (02/06, 19:23) he said: “I know talks have taken place and there’s been a head of terms submitted. But when it comes to actually getting into the meaty part of the transaction – the Sales Purchase Agreement and the Owner and Directors Test – I’m not sure we’re there yet, whatever BZG say.

“We’ll have to wait and see but I will say that BZG tell me they’re absolutely sure it’s going to happen.”

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has been in charge of the Magpies for over a decade, with two relegations suffered during his tenure.

Opinion

Plucky confidence or measured belief? The BZG seem totally and utterly convinced that Newcastle United will be their club in the not too distant future and all the noises coming from their direction, both publicly and with what they appear to be telling the media behind the scenes, suggest the Toon Army should get excited. Unfortunately for the St James’ Park faithful, the same cannot be said about things from the end of the club. Mike Ashley is notorious for remaining quiet, even when a statement seems to be the best course of action, so it should come as no surprise there has been nothing yet – but if something was happening, you imagine the club would have felt obliged to inform the public. That has not been the case and so you can understand why there is a feeling of caution on Tyneside. Here is hoping this is sorted out sooner rather than later, giving the fans some much needed closure, regardless of what the outcome is.
