Lee Hendrie claimed that Aston Villa needed to strengthen nearly every position of their squad in the transfer window ahead of their first season back in the Premier League.

The former Villans player shared that the club needed to make signings to improve defensively as well as find a new centre-forward and also needed to add a couple of midfielders to improve the depth of the squad.

Hendrie also remarked on the current goalkeeper situation at Villa but seemed to be keen on Jed Steer remaining the club’s No.1 rather than a replacement being signed.

“I look at the players that have gone, yes they’re experienced, but it’s time to bring some youth into the side that’s for sure,” said Hendrie on Sky Sports News (10:36am, Thursday June 13th).

“Yes experience is key in this league that’s for sure but Dean knows what he has got, he has his plan set out.

“I looked at the loan signings last season, Tammy Abraham was immense for Aston Villa last season and scored a lot of goals, so they need to replace him with certainly someone who has experience and can bang the goals in.

“Also defensively, Tyrone Mings, those two were so key in Villa’s push for promotion last season so you look at the players they’re trying to bring in, Kortney Hause as well, obviously Tyrone Mings they’ll certainly try to get hold of and then there’s the goalkeeping area.

“It keeps cropping up, five goalkeepers last season and Jed Steer obviously ended up having a fantastic back end of the season and it will be unfortunate if he loses his place, so there’s lots of areas Villa do need to bulk up on but y’know the midfield area is quite strong.

“So if they add a couple more on there but defensively and the centre-forward are key areas to address at the moment.”

OPINION

Hendrie seems to think that the Villans need to be busy in the transfer market this summer as it seems every position needs strengthening in his eyes. While the former Villan seems happy with the club’s current first-choice midfielders, he does want more depth added. This is understandable as when you look at the options behind Jack Grealish and John McGinn, they’re arguably a notable level below. However whether the Villans can get the amount of business Hendrie believes needs to be done is debatable. The Villans will only want to welcome top-quality players to improve their squad and that costs money. It’s hard to see Aston Villa being able to sign five quality players within their budget as you feel they won’t want to risk their financial security just because they’re back in the Premier League. Yet who knows, maybe Aston Villa’s chiefs have a trick up their sleeves in order to pull off a tremendous amount of business without breaking the bank.
