West Ham have written off their pursuit of Eibar midfielder Joan Jordan with the 24-year-old now being expected to join Sevilla.

The Daily Star previously reported that the Hammers had enquired about the versatile playmaker after failing in their attempts to sign Barcelona’s Andre Gomes and Real Madrid’s Dani Ceballo.

The newspaper claimed that the Hammers had widen their search and were keen on Jordan with him having only one year left on his deal as well as a £13.3million release clause.

Yet journalist Paul Brown, who works for the Daily Star and wrote the article, has now taken to Twitter to provide a disappointing update on the Hammers’ pursuit of the midfielder.

The trusted reporter shares that Jordan is expected to sign a four-year contract to join Sevilla and that the London club have effectively thrown in the towel despite the La Liga club not agreeing a fee with Eibar thus far.

#whufc midfield target #1043 Joan Jordan now expected to join #Sevilla. Four-year contract with option to extend. Clubs yet to agree fee but Hammers (& #afc who were also interested) seem to have written this one off. #MonchiWins,” wrote Brown via his personal Twitter account.

Given this update, the Hammers should be kicking themselves as not only have they appeared to have given up at the first obstacle, Jordan would have been a great signing.

The 24-year-old impressed in his 38 outings for Eibar in his latest campaign, scoring four goals and assisting four, as he was involved in 17% (Source: Transfermarkt) of their league goals.

Jordan is also known for his ability from direct free-kicks (Source: WhoScored) which would have likely come in useful and it’s says so much that he averaged a 7.14 match rating (Source: WhoScored) in La Liga despite playing for eleventh-placed Eibar.

Jordan therefore would have boosted the Hammers’ attacking threat in midfield and given his age, he would have been able to do that for many seasons.

The playmaker would have also been a useful addition as Manuel Pellegrini would have had many options on how to use him as Jordan did start a couple of games as a winger for Eibar in his latest season, and did have a tendency to drift into different positions during games.
