Ian Abrahams took to Twitter to send goalkeeper David Martin a message after it was confirmed he would join West Ham after his Millwall contract ends.

The Hammers confirmed on Monday, via their official website, that they had signed the 33-year-old goalkeeper and that he would join the club on July 1st.

Abrahams, who works for talkSPORT and is a known West Ham fan, wasted no time in welcoming Martin to the London Stadium and shared he bet Martin’s dad, Alvin Martin, was proud.

“Good luck to David Martin after signing for @WestHamUtd – I bet Dad is very proud my friend,” wrote Abrahams on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

In case the Hammers’ official statement didn’t make it clear, West Ham’s latest signing is the son of a club legend. This legend of course is Alvin Martin and it’s fair to say Abrahams is probably right to say that he is one proud father. Alvin played 469 times for the Hammers and will be so proud to see his son play for the club he made his name at. David (Martin) is unlikely to feature as much as his father did, unless there is some major scientific breakthrough where players play significantly beyond the age of 40, but here’s hoping he makes his dad proud in the outings he does make. Martin has clearly been signed to be back-up to Lukasz Fabianski, but he might get a run out in some of the Hammers’ cup games next season. The move makes a lot of sense from Martin’s perspective as he has gone from being stuck on Millwall’s bench, to being stuck on a Premier League bench instead.
