West Ham midfielder Edimilson Fernandes has left the club permanently and signed for German club Mainz, as confirmed by West Ham’s official website

The club confirmed on Monday that the 23-year old has signed for Mainz on a permanent transfer for an undisclosed fee.

Since joining the Hammers back in 2016, the Switzerland midfielder has made 48 first team appearances in all competitions, before spending last season out on loan with Serie A club Fiorentina.

Fernandes, who has eight caps for Switzerland, featured 33 times for the Italian club this season, scoring and assisting two goals respectively throughout his campaign.

OPINION

Fernandes hasn’t quite made too big of a name for himself around the London Stadium over the past few seasons, and although he has featured a fair bit for the Hammers, it seems he was not a part of Manuel Pellegrini’s future plans with the club. The Switzerland midfielder impressed last season on loan in Italy, and has effectively since earned himself a solid move to the Bundesliga, which should be considered a good move at the age of 23, as it will allow him to continue developing and experiencing a different type of football over the next few years of his career. Also, the money from this move will help towards the Hammers’ race to sign Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes, who has been a reported target for Pellegrini over the last month or so. Fernandes wasn’t going to be playing for the Hammers anytime soon it seems, so this has been a good exchange for West Ham, especially as they can now use the funds collected from the move to put towards bringing in extra midfield cover for the new Premier League season.
