Aston Villa surely need to go all out in their reported pursuit of Chelsea defender Gary Cahill if they’re to have any chance of signing him based on Tony Cascarino’s verdict.

The Sun previously reported that the Villans were in pursuit of the experienced centre-back as Dean Smith was considering signing him on a free transfer.

Cahill is available to be signed for free as Chelsea previously confirmed via their official website that the defender was leaving Stamford Bridge once his contract expires at the end of the month.

The pundit was discussing the players who had been recently confirmed to be leaving their Premier League sides and was confident that the 33-year-old enforcer would have no problems finding a club.

In fact Cascarino had so much faith in Cahill’s talent that he seem to suggest that the enforcer was still good enough to play for a top-six side in the Premier League.

“Gary will get a club, it’s what type of club he goes for,” said Cascarino on talkSPORT (9:36am, Saturday June 8th).

“Will it be a side that will challenge the top-six? I feel Cahill was a little unlucky at times as there were times he could have been in the Chelsea team.”

Cahill only managed eight appearances for the Blues in his 2018/19 campaign and it seems Cascarino believes the enforcer was unfairly treated.

The pundit clearly suggests that the defender should have made more appearances and that implies that the experienced defender would be a fantastic signing.

This is because considering that a notable pundit still thinks Cahill is good enough to attract a top-six side, it shows how much of a coup it would be for the Villans to snap him up as one of the newly promoted teams.

The 33-year-old would be an experienced option, he has featured 349 times in England’s top-flight and would be a calm presence to have at the back as a result.

Given that Cascarino probably isn’t alone in his high opinion of Cahill, then not only does it show that Aston Villa should sign him, it highlights that they will need to go all out for him; as the defender is likely to have many clubs chasing his services.

Especially as he’ll be available on a free transfer.
