Arsenal are set to seal the free capture of starlet Markus Schubert as they make contact with Championship sides over loaning him out for his first season at the club, according to the Independent.

The newspaper claim on their website that the 21-year-old shot stopper, rated as one of the best promising keepers on the continent, is set to join the Gunners on a free transfer as his contract comes to an end at Dynamo Dresden, with a contract on the verge of being agreed.

However, it is said the 6’1″ (source: Transfermarkt) stopper will be shipped out on loan, rather than covering for Bernd Leno between the sticks, and that the north Londoners have already made moves to get him game time in England or Germany, having been Dresden’s first choice keeper last season.

Opinion

It seems the Gunners think they already have their man on board with them offering him up to other sides – and they will be praying nothing ends up going wrong with their free transfer that leaves them with egg on their face. Petr Cech’s retirement does mean they needed to bolster their options between the sticks and how better to do so than getting someone in for nothing? It leaves them with their problem sorted and manager Unai Emery with funds to invest elsewhere in the squad. Schubert will no doubt look forward to working with fellow countryman Leno at the Emirates Stadium but it appears he might have to wait 12 months before getting the chance to prove himself against the current number one choice in training. A good move for the Gunners who have regularly taken advantage of snapping up top talents coming to the end of their contract. Will Schubert be able to forge a legacy between the sticks? That will the club’s hope moving forward.
