Mauricio Pochettino has accepted that Daniel Levy’s outlook in the transfer market will not change drastically, according to The Guardian journalist David Hytner.

The Argentine has not spent a penny in either of the last two transfer windows, and is expected to change that trend this summer.

But Hytner claims that Daniel Levy’s priority will still be balancing the books in north London.

Writing in a piece for the Guardian, Hytner said: “As things stand, Pochettino appears to have accepted a fundamental point, which is that the club’s outlook will not change radically.

“Levy will continue to balance incoming and departing player business as he meets the bank repayment deadlines on the stadium project, and that means Pochettino being denied the chance to attack the market with the gusto he might like.”

OPINION

This is a bit of a sobering blow for Spurs fans, who will have been hoping that Levy really cut loose and let his hair down, figuratively speaking, in the transfer window this summer. To be fair, there’s no guarantee that he won’t still spend big, but he will no doubt still have one eye on the bank balance while he’s doing so. That’s not the worst thing in the world, of course. You would far rather have an owner who believed in slow growth and fiscal stability than one who went in all guns blazing at the risk of ruining the club. But if things don’t improve quickly with regards to Spurs’ transfer activity, Levy runs the very real risk of losing Mauricio Pochettino. That would be a disaster, given how much the Argentine has done with such limited resources. Levy, therefore, is walking a bit of a tightrope.
