Mauricio Pochettino will get rid of Marcus Edwards this summer unless the Tottenham youngster is able to blow him away in pre-season training, according to football.london.

The news outlet claims that with the once highly-rated 20-year-old in the final year of his contact, Spurs are planning to offload him before the start of next season, rather than let him leave for nothing in 12 months’ time.

It is understood that Edwards did do well in the second-half of last season while on loan at Eredivisie side Excelsior, but what happens in pre-season training is more likely to decide whether or not he has a future with Tottenham.

OPINION

It is a real shame to see how Edwards’ career at Tottenham has appeared to have gone down the drain. He was likened to Lionel Messi by Pochettino in 2016, but the Spurs boss must surely regret that comparison because since then he has really failed to live up to expectations. Edwards had a miserable loan spell at Norwich in 2018 when he managed to make just one appearance in the Championship. Last summer he was sent out on loan to Excelsior, which proved just how far the young attacker had fallen. He took his time to get going in the Netherlands but towards the end of the campaign his form picked up and he ended the season with two goals and four assists in 28 appearances. It could have gone worse, but he had to do something really special to prove he still has a future at Tottenham, and it really does not seem he has anymore.
