Leeds United have limited funds to work with in the summer transfer window as they need to be wary of adhering to Financial Fair Play regulations, according to journalist Phil Hay.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reporter, one of the most reputable writers covering events at Elland Road, claims on his personal Twitter account that having seen Sheffield Wednesday face a transfer embargo, the Whites themselves need to be careful with some money available to manager Marcelo Bielsa.

Championship finances have come under scrutiny over the last 12 months, Aston Villa facing trouble last season and Birmingham City being handed a points deduction for their breach of FFP rules.

Opinion

With hopes of promotion next season at Elland Road, it looks as though the Whites will have to do it the hard way. Andrea Radrizzani is an ambitious owner – his capture and retention of Marcelo Bielsa as manager demonstrating that clearly – but his funds are not limitless and remaining in the Championship has done them not help whatsoever in furthering themselves as a football club. The last thing a club like Leeds, who have been through some exceptional lows in the last 15 years, need is a Financial Fair Play ruling going against them and hurting their chances of making it out of the second tier and back into the Premier League. It remains to be seen what sort of spending the Whites do carry out this summer but it might well be a case of having to sell before bringing in any significant new arrivals. Unfortunately, money is everything in football nowadays and Leeds do not have access to the funds some of their rivals might.
