Tottenham will tempt Leeds United with an initial low bid in order to try to prise attacker Jack Clarke away from the Whites, according to Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

Spurs are believed to have got work underway on a £12million deal for the 18-year-old [Daily Mail], who impressed with 25 appearances in all competitions in his breakthrough season.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, however, Nixon said that the North London club will instead start at a low price in the hope that Leeds will be tempted by the cash on offer.

OPINION

If this report from Nixon is true, it is an interesting approach from Spurs. Clarke is certainly an exciting talent, and having broke through to the first team under Marcelo Bielsa last season, he scored two goals and assisted two others in 25 appearances. From an 18-year-old, that is certainly good going given his relative lack of experience. But this reported approach does make sense. Tottenham are not the kind of team to go all out to sign their targets, and Daniel Levy prefers to be shrewd with the club’s money. And this approach could work. There is no doubt Leeds need to add new players to their squad, and losing Clarke for any amount of money would present an instant profit to the Elland Road club, with the winger having risen through the academy ranks. Having said that, the Whites could also raise the stakes and demand a bit more from Spurs, who know they also have to add players if they are to progress next season. Or, Leeds could reject any moves and keep the player on, but that will likely be hard. Whatever happens, this is one to keep an eye on.
