Newcastle United have lost ground in their attempt to sign Club Brugge forward Wesley Moraes, according to the Chronicle.

The online outlet claim that the uncertainty surrounding the future of Rafael Benitez has led to the Magpies falling behind in the race to sign the Brazilian.

The Chronicle report that Moraes was said to be excited with the prospect of working under the Spaniard, and sources close to the 22-year-old have admitted he is likely to move elsewhere, with talks beginning with another club.

Newcastle were favourites for the forward’s signature after it was revealed by the Chronicle that Benitez had made direct contact with the powerhouse over a move to St James’ Park.

Wesley enjoyed a superb season in Belgium, scoring 17 and assisting a further 10 goals in his 48 appearances.

OPINION

This will be a real kick in the teeth for all involved at Newcastle but should come as no surprise. There has been uncertainty in the air ever since the end of the last Premier League season with many questions remaining unanswered. Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley have failed to secure Benitez to a new deal and amid the ongoing takeover talks, the club seemed to have paid the price by missing out on the 6’2″ forward [Source: Transfermarkt]. At only 22-years-old, Wesley fit the mould perfectly to come in and start firing all cylinders under Benitez. The former Liverpool boss found great success with a powerful forward in Salomon Rondon last season, as he allowed the Magpies’ creative attackers to get on the ball in more dangerous areas. Moraes would have been perfect for that role and at such a young age, the Brazilian could have enjoyed a great career at St James’ Park. Despite the potential takeover being positive news, the new owners could have a lot to answer for should they not deliver the goods once arriving.
