You have to feel for Newcastle United fans this summer. The Toon Army have had to put up with a barrage of speculation and uncertainty since the season ended, for better and for worse. On the one hand, they have had the prospect of a Middle Eastern takeover to get their pulses racing, but on the other, nothing has come of it yet, and at the moment, there is still no word on the future of Rafa Benitez. The Spaniard’s contract runs out on June 30th, and as of yet, there are no assurances over whether or not he will put pen to paper on a new deal. Some fans believe that could all be about to change today, however. According to the Chronicle, Benitez has been spotted at the Magpies’ training ground this afternoon, and fans are certain that it means something. Just what exactly is another argument entirely. Many, naturally, are assuming the worst, with a lot of supporters suggesting that he could be saying his goodbyes. Perhaps that is grey sky thinking at it’s finest, but you can’t blame fans for being frustrated when they are hit with “no comment” after “no comment” from the club. Benitez could, of course, be on his way to sign a new deal, but this just goes to show the level of pessimism that Mike Ashley has bred into the club.
