Rangers target Bahlul Mustafazada has admitted that the prospect of working with Steven Gerrard would be interesting.

The Gers are reported to hold an interest in the 21-year-old central defender and will face their Old Firm rivals Celtic in a race for his signature.

Mustafazada is quoted by the Daily Record as saying: “My aim is to play abroad and I have read about the interest from both Celtic and Rangers. There’s been nothing concrete yet though. I would do anything to try and make this move happen.”

“Celtic or Rangers? For me, there is no difference. Yes, it would be interesting to work with a coach like Steven Gerrard, but the main thing for me is my development.”

The 22-year-old has played 29 times this season for his current club, Qabala, with his current deal set to expire at the end of June. This means he will be available on a free and the young Azerbaijan defender claims he is not going to move to Glasgow just to sit on the bench.

OPINION

The latest remarks from Mustafazade are interesting and show good intent from the youngster, who wants to come to Scotland and leave his mark on either Celtic or Rangers. With Gareth McAuley to be released and Joe Worrall already returning to Nottingham Forest after a loan spell, the Gers’ definitely offer the Azerbaijan youth international a much higher chance of playing regular football. Another intriguing point is that despite saying he doesn’t mind who he will join, Mustafazada only mentioned Steven Gerrard, claiming he would find it interesting to work under the former Liverpool man, who has made a great impact on the Light Blues’ since his arrival. If Rangers can pull off his signing and beat Celtic to the punch, it would be an early victory for Gerrard who is looking to challenge his Old Firm rivals, even more, this year after a great first year in which he beat the Hoops twice.
