Sky Sports pundit Danny Mills believes Rangers are in the driving seat to re-sign Ryan Kent due to his admiration of Steven Gerrard.

He believes that Kent would opt for another season under Gerrard’s tutelage ahead of Leeds United and other clubs, even if a permanent deal does not materialise.

Last year’s Scottish young player of the season enjoyed an impressive loan spell at Rangers from his parent club Liverpool, scoring six and assisting six goals in his 23 league appearances.

And Gerrard has made it clear from the outset that he wishes to take the 22-year-old left winger on loan again for another season.

“I think Steven Gerrard has more sway than Marcelo Bielsa in this situation,” Mills told Football Insider.

“Kent did well at Rangers last season, Gerrard rates him highly and knows him from Liverpool. There is likely to be a bit of hero worship of Gerrard from the player.

“Rangers want to sign him permanently or on loan, and I think they have a very good chance.”

OPINION

Rangers would love to have Kent back and the youngster was one of the standout players for Steven Gerrard last season. If it comes down to placing him at Rangers or Leeds it could be a tough call for Klopp. On the one hand he knows what he’s going to get from Rangers. Kent enjoyed his football last season and definitely improved and grew as a player. However, there may be a feeling that he’s done what he can do there and that Leeds would present him with a different sort of challenge. He would definitely learn a lot from Marcelo Bielsa, but the issue there would be the high number of injuries Leeds players suffered last season. If it comes down to a straight choice for Kent we’re with Mills and could see the player opting for another season, hoping a trophy-winning one at Rangers.
