Mills in awe of White

Danny Mills believes that Leeds United would be making a good addition by brining in Brighton defender Ben White this summer.

Leeds are thought to be interested in securing a move for White on a season-long loan deal this summer, according to a report from the Yorkshire Evening Post.

White spent part of last season out on loan at League 1 Peterborough United, and the 21-year-old could be made available for another move away from Brighton this summer following the club retaining their Premier League status last term.

Mills believes he would be a good signing and has suggested that White’s potential addition could see Marcelo Bielsa’s side revert to a formation including three central defenders, with Pontuss Janson and Liam Cooper lining up alongside the defender.

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills said: “I think Ben White would be a really shrewd signing. He hasn’t played a lot of football, and might not play that much if he stays at Brighton next season.

“But he’s been training with Premier League players and Leeds will have done their homework and looked at him in depth. He would certainly be a good addition to the squad.

“Leeds need back-up in the centre-back area, even if Jansson and Cooper stay. They sometimes played three at the back last season and that could be the plan for next season, especially if he is signed this month and Bielsa works with him in pre-season.”

OPINION

Mills is right to suggest that White would be a useful addition for Leeds’ squad this summer, and the defender would provide the potential to provide competition and cover for Jansson and Cooper. The 21-year-old could also, as Mills points out, slot into a three-man defence next term for Bielsa’s side meaning he would add greater tactical flexibility. Bielsa showed last season that he is able to work with young and talented players to develop them but at the same time continue to get results on the field with the Whites. That suggests White could be an ideal addition for Bielsa to improve on the training ground, and it could prove to be a beneficial move for Brighton as well as their defender is likely to improve under the Argentine’s coaching. Leeds are unlikely to have a hefty transfer budget this summer, after missing out on promotion to the Premier League, meaning they could be needing to make some astute loan signings for young and talented players such as White during the transfer window.
