Danny Mills believes that Christian Eriksen has played his last match for Tottenham.

The Dane has made his desire to seek a new challenge this summer clear, as reported by Ekstra Bladet, and Sky Sports pundit Mills expects him to get his wish.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “As a player, you can get a little bit stale when you’ve been at one club a long time.

“You need a fresh challenge, and that’s probably the case with Eriksen.

“He is a top player, an exceptional talent and he will want to win things. He will be thinking, ‘can Tottenham win the Premier League and the Champions League next season?’ Probably not.

“If the interest from Real Madrid is as genuine as it seems, it appears he has played his last Spurs match. Tottenham and Daniel Levy won’t make it easy for him, but he will have a price and, if Real pay it, he will go.”

OPINION

You fear that Mills is right. Certainly, Eriksen has made it very clear as to where he sees himself next season; namely, not at Spurs. That’s not to say that he doesn’t love the club, but you can understand why he might feel now is the right time to move on with his career. At 27, he hasn’t got too long left at the very top level, and there are no guarantees that Spurs will become regular trophy contenders any time soon. Does Eriksen want to get to the end of his career and look back on a lost Champions League final as his greatest achievement? Of course not. He has the talent to cut it at the very highest level, and if he didn’t move on now, he would spend his whole life wondering what might have been. He has been a fantastic servant to Tottenham down the years, and no supporter can begrudge him his dream move.
